DTE Energy on Saturday to offer free tours of solar panel fields

LAPEER — Area residents are invited to enjoy a DTE Energy Lapeer Solar Celebration on the grounds of the recently-commissioned DTE Lapeer solar park on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 11. a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will offer complimentary hayrides among the acres of solar panels, interactive educational activities, games and face painting for kids, cider and donuts and live entertainment.

Guests who attend will be able to park free; parking and shuttle service will be available at Mott Community College, 550 Lake Drive.

DTE representatives will be on site to provide tours and answer questions about this unique addition to the community. The Lapeer solar park is the largest in Michigan with 200,000 panels — enough to power 11,000 homes with clean energy. Work on the project began in May 2016.

DTE Energy has invested $170 million in solar energy since 2008. The Detroit-based utility powers 450,000 homes from 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy, with solar energy making up 7 percent of its renewable energy portfolio, according to a press release issued Monday.

DTE’s renewable energy portfolio now includes 13 wind parks and 31 solar arrays, which supplies more than 10 percent of electricity to customers.
