HAROLD ELI BEST, 93, a lifetime resident of Metamora, died Friday, August 3, 2018.

Harold was born March 6, 1925, in the Metamora farm house, son to Harry and Mary (Rossman) Best. He attended Kile School in Metamora and graduated from Lapeer High School, class of 1942. Harold married Kathryn Elizabeth Ludwig on August 23, 1947 in Oxford. Harold Best was committed to the community he lived - the following are a few of Harold’s civic related activities: he was Metamora Township Supervisor (& township assessor) from 1960 to 1990, he was a charter member of the Lapeer Area Ambulance Service, a member of the Lapeer County Road Commission Board, local director of the Michigan Milk Producers Association, a member of the USDA and a member of the Oxford Co-Op Elevator Board of Directors. Harold was a life member of the Metamora Lions Club since the ‘50’s. He was awarded the “Lion of the Year” in 1994 and the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 1998. Harold was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned his Eagle Scout in 1943. In 2002, Harold’s commitment to community was recognized when he was named the Grand Marshall of the Metamora Country Days Parade. Above all, Harold was a farmer - taking great pride in Best Valley Farms and a family man - taking great pride in his family.

Harold is survived by his children, Richard (Linda Farnsworth) Best of Metamora, Carolyn (Al) Woodley of Metamora, Darlene (Greg) Wise of Metamora and Brenda (Dan) Coulter of Metamora; seven grandchildren, Ricky (Michelle) Best, Shelly (Dean) Morell, Alpheus Woodley, Crystal (Kyle) Walton, Colleen (Brent) Coulter-Sims, Danny (Casey) Coulter and Tommy Wise; seven great-grandchildren, Nick, Christopher, Hunter, Christopher, Brooke, Kylie and Kody.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Elizabeth Best; son-in-law, Al Woodley, Jr.; five brothers, Harry “Junior” Best, Donald Best, Ernest Dean Best, Glenn Best and Lynn Best; sister, Mary Ellen Thick; and his aforementioned parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Metamora Lions Club, 3790 North Oak Street, Metamora, Michigan 48455.

Harold’s funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Pastor Bruce Craner will officiate. Burial will take place in the Metamora Cemetery, Metamora. Harold’s family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday morning just prior to the service.
