Photos by Joe Oster FLINT — The Lapeer football team enters the fourth week of the season as heavy road favorites against the Flint Jaguars, 1-2. The Lightning have been dominant thus far this season, outscoring opponents 97-26.

While solid in all facets, Lapeer has been led by its defense this season, which held Saginaw Arthur Hill to -3 yards rushing and 40 yards of total offense in Friday’s 49-0 victory.

“We took care of business and now have to get ready for Flint (on Friday),” said Lapeer coach Mike Smith after the Arthur Hill win.

The only question mark for Lapeer will be the running back position, where an ankle injury kept starter Jalen Kirkland sidelined last week. Darien Baker started in his place and is expected to repeat, if Kirkland is unable to go against Flint. Baker ran for 81 yards and a touchdown against Arthur Hill on just four carries. The Lightning running back corps will also rely on Brandon Lilly, who ran for 102 yards on 14 carries in Week Two against Dow, and Phoenix Dickson, who takes a majority of his backfield snaps at the Wildcat position. Regardless, the Lightning offense will be directed by quarterback Brady Apple, who went 4-for- 4 through the air last week for 83 yards and a touchdown. Apple has been consistent over the first three weeks, going 28-for- 44 with 420 yards and two touchdowns, along with two rushing scores.

Their lone win this season came in an 18-0 victory of Arthur Hill on August 30. This is only the second season of existence for the Flint Jaguars, who were formed as a merger between the sports teams of Flint Northwestern and Southwestern Academy. Lapeer won the only meeting between the two schools last season 41-0.

Kickoff will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Atwood Stadium in Flint.
